Crois de Bouquet

Thurs. Jan 21. I spent most of the day at the hospital in CdB, mostly traumatic injuries from the Quake, long day, 11pm, tired, and I just lost it. I thought I was feeling pretty good, accomplished a lot today, got back to camp at 11pm, and out of the blue, ended up sobbing like a baby, it actually felt good, must've been too much input, it wasn't sadness at all, it was a very strange feeling, a release of emotions, a catharsis. I had several casualties today, I was the sole physician in QdB, I got what I was looking for, and I feel I'm finally doing the job I was trained to do. We finally got the orphans (Kenny 10, Gino 8 and Renise 12) to an orphanage run by a philanthropist named Grant! I'll miss them, we all slept in the tents last night and had fun playing with my walkie-talkies. I thought I was going to be killed today, I was walking from the hospital to the orphanage when I ended up surrounded by starving Hatians, staring and grabing at my backpak, trying to talk to me in Creole, and were getting agitated because I don't understand what they're saying. We dare not stop walking, Darling, all 90 lbs of her is keeping close with the children. It felt like a real close call, I have never been so scared in my life, my neck hairs were on end, my heart was pounding, and I was ready to fight. We were finally pulled into someone's "home" off the street. When I say home, I mean stick walls, and dirt floor, no lights or furniture. There is no electricity in QdB. We literally ran back to the hospital after the crowd dissipated. I am supposed to meet in the AM with MSF (Doctors without Borders) I met them today briefly, and they said they wanted me on their team. I guess that's unusual for an American (they don't like us, and its not a secret) I will accept their invitation, if only for the security....g

  1. What you're doing is awesome, Grant! Keep up the blog, it's a great record of what is going on. If you can think of any way Brenda and I or our Rotary Club can help, let us know! Have you encountered any functioning NGO's helping out, other than MSF?
    Stay safe!
