sorry for missing a day, been on a whirlwind, so yesterday we had a new driver/security, vehicle was a heap, couldn't start it twice, then we were in bad traffic congestion and the car got bumped, so my driver jumps out of the drivers seat with the truck running, pulls his gun, and attempts to attack the driver of the truck that hit him essentially causing a riot, wasn't long before people started looking at me in the back seat, so I hopped to the front, which would have done no good, as cars weren't going anywhere, again I was extremely nervous to say the least. Needless to say, he doesn't drive for me anymore, you can have a gun, or you can have a temper, but you can't have both. Yesterday I did recon for UNICEF, visited 5 orphanages, assessed medical situation, some medical care too. Too many to describe, but there was one baby who was lethargic and unarousable, we didn't have the ability to transport, the caretaker promised to take the baby to General Hospital, which I doubted, its a nightmare anyway, so I got back to basecamp and requested an evac, I was sure he was going to die in a few hours without fluid resuscitation, there were 7 of them on the sidewalk of a busy street, being taken care of by a 13 yr old, who thought the amoxicillin she was feeding them was good for their diarrhea, the man in charge of picking them up (Haitian Government official) got the word, left for 5 minutes, (a 30 minute drive) returned and said there was no sick baby. There were actually three very ill, but he essentially laid a death sentence on the worst one. My angel at Unicef was in tears, but nothing we can do because of curfew, I went out first thing in the am, he was still alive, started IV and Rocephin, lungs sounded like pneumonia, now he is at my hospital in CdB with our mid-wife for the night along with 2 others I was able to rescue from the street. It wasn't easy, while we were loading up, a woman who claimed to be an orphanage owner claimed them, Justin was able to determine there were alterior motives, and I'll explain more later. I convinced her they would die without hospitalization, and she wouldn't make any money off them anyway. These children are between 6 mos. and 2 years old. We'll see in the am if he makes it. One girl 18 mos won't let me go, no matter who I try to give her to, she screams if I try to let her go, if I put her down she screams and cries until I return, nobody else, the haitian nurses are baffled and find it hilarious, she has a broken wrist, multiple facial lacerations, and I will probably have to amputate her toes tomorrow.

  1. Grant, I am in awe of what your are doing and you are a true hero. I had a little bake sale this past Friday for Catholic Relief Services and made about 250.00, was pretty proud. After I read your blog, I want to do more so I'll put my thinking cap on. Thank you for representing America in such a great way. As a mom and fellow human, my heart just aches for those little ones. Sounds like you found yourself a girlfriend with the baby girl. LOL. Keep your head and spirits up and when you feel down, know that we, your old friends and current friends, are thinking of you and sending prayers your way. Sending you much love, hope, encouragement, and hugs. Lauretta Avina

  4. Grant,

We may have met once before, I am Robb Petty's daughter, Ruthie. You are so brave and good to serve the people of Haiti during these times. I have been reading your blog daily.

I know it is too early to put this into action, but my husband and I are interested in adopting a Haitian child. From what I read the Haitian goverment has halted new adoptions for now. I understand this as there are many unaccompanied children. If you learn of anything while assisting the orphanages, would you please contact me? ruthiemoutafian@yahoo.com.

Best of everything to you. Be safe on your journey- With graditude, Ruthie Moutafian
